"Zephyr" is more than just a game; it is an immersive experience that combines soothing soundscapes and dynamic gameplay. The sound design of Zephyr plays a crucial role in creating a contemplative and calming atmosphere, inviting players into a peaceful, virtual space where they can explore, reflect, and unwind.
My Roles in Zephyr
In Zephyr, I took on the roles of game designer, sound designer, sound integrator, and UI designer. My objective was to craft an engaging auditory environment and a visually appealing interface that encourages reflection and relaxation. I recorded, designed, and integrated all sounds directly into the game’s code, ensuring seamless interaction between audio cues and gameplay. Additionally, I designed the user interface and created the logo, further enhancing the overall player experience.
The Creative Process
Sound design was central to Zephyr’s immersive experience. I recorded and edited sounds from nature and everyday life using Reaper. Inspired by games like Flower and Exo One, I created audio cues that enhanced feelings of freedom while maintaining a calming tone, allowing players to feel deeply connected to the environment.

Dynamic Soundscapes
Sound plays a crucial role in Zephyr, responding to player movements and interactions:
Rolling Sounds: For the character's movement, I layered recordings of a Velleda pen rolling on a slate and a cart rolling, enhanced with textures like sugar and fabric to create a granular effect. As the player's speed increases, elements that heighten the sensation of velocity are introduced.
Wind and Tornado Effects: Sound cues dynamically trigger intensified wind effects as players approach a tornado, creating an immersive experience.
Sliding Sounds: I programmed sliding sound effects that respond to player movement in real time, adding to the game’s immersion.

Musical Atmosphere
The music evolves through four distinct phases: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Each phase features a unique identity, from light flutes to deeper cello tones, which I integrated into the game’s code to ensure smooth transitions.

Sound Integration in Code
As the sound integrator, I collaborated with the development team to implement all audio elements, including:
FMOD Integration: I set triggers for ambient sounds and synced music transitions with gameplay events.
Gameplay Dynamics: Sound parameters adjust based on the player's actions, such as activating the glider or sliding at high speed.
UI Design
To maintain a clean and minimalist user interface, we opted for overlay menus with transparent buttons. This design allows players to focus on the main content without visual distractions. The subtle darkening filter behind the buttons ensures readability, even in complex scenes. The transparency and design harmonize with the game’s overall aesthetic, creating an intuitive user experience.
Logo Design
The Zephyr logo is a captivating representation of the game's essence, featuring a simplified version of our main character within a circle symbolizing the day-night cycle. The iridescent colors evoke the hues of the character's wings, establishing a strong visual link to the game. This cohesive design enhances player immersion, inviting them into the enchanting world of Zephyr.

Typography
For the title of our game, we chose the KOLAK typeface, which reflects the distinctive features of our dune and mountain landscapes. KOLAK’s rounded curves evoke the shape of our character, creating an immediate visual connection to the game’s themes. This choice enhances the welcoming and captivating atmosphere of Zephyr.
For body text, we selected Bodoni MT for its simplified form, ensuring readability while maintaining visual harmony. The combination of KOLAK for titles and Bodoni MT for body text provides a cohesive reading experience that enhances immersion in the Zephyr universe.
Conclusion
By embracing the roles of game designer, sound designer, and sound integrator, I contributed to making Zephyr a serene audio-driven adventure. Every sound, from the whisper of the wind to the crescendo of the music, was crafted and integrated to provide players with a relaxing, immersive experience. Zephyr invites players to explore a tranquil world where sound and gameplay harmonize beautifully.
